SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – A handful of OCCAC hoopers have been recognized for their superb performances on the hardwood last week (Jan. 28-Feb. 3), named the conference’s Players of the Week. Kierre James (Sinclair) and Clair Schmitmeyer (Edison State) split the D-II women’s votes to earn co-accolades while Owens’ Moreina Moore picked up the D-III honors. For the men, Sean McNeil of Sinclair and Lorain County’s Thomas Hronis brought home the D-II and D-III laurels, respectively.
Sean McNeil (6-04/FR – Cooper H.S. – Union, KY) continued his dominance of this space for 2018-19, corralling his league-leading sixth OCCAC weekly honor. For this latest distinction, McNeil broke a pair of school records with his fifth 40-point game and making his 90th 3-pointer this season. He played 38 minutes in a 77-65 win over Bryant & Stratton (OH), racking up 40 points on 13-of-22 (59%) shooting (7-of-13 from beyond the arc). McNeil added 7-of-8 foul shots, five rebounds, three steals and two assists.
McNeil continues to lead the nation in scoring at 31.5 points per contest as well as 3 pointer made per game at 4.7 (41.7%). Not only is he doing it from the perimeter but he can also get to the rim, putting him second in the nation with making 6.5 free throws a game at 88.7%.
As a freshman, he will graduate this May and will be ready to move on with three years eligibility remaining at the next level. He has already received interest from notable programs such as; Dayton, Louisville, Kentucky, Marshall, Marquette, Missouri, Ohio State, Ole Miss, San Diego State, Texas Tech, Toledo, Virginia, West Virginia, Western Kentucky, Winthrop and Xavier just to name a few of the more than 60 D-I programs calling and stopping by Building 8 Arena.
